Ultimate players you look up to and why? / Joueur(euse) d’ultimate que tu considères ton modèle et pourquoi?: Brayden Gee has always been a role model of mine because of the way he carries himself and his ability to communicate and talk to his players. From when I first started playing Ultimate competitively to playing in Waterloo this summer, Brayden has and continues to be one of the coaches that I turn to for advice.
I look up to Victoria Lam because of her passion not only for the sport, but also for coaching. Amidst the chaos of cheering, stall counting, and calling for the frisbee, Vic’s voice will always be the one clear thought as I stare down the vast green field. Victoria will always be someone I look up to because she’s the one who continuously reminds me that the reason people play frisbee is because it’s fun.
What does Spirit of the Game means to you? / Qu’est-ce que l’Esprit du jeu veut dire pour toi?: Spirit of the game is one of the most interesting parts of ultimate to me. With no referees or anyone to ensure the flow of the game is smooth, everyone on the field contributes to a safe and unique rule system. SOTG is something players new to ultimate might not understand. “Why don’t I just always contest?” is something that gets asked a lot when introducing the sport to players. However, over time they begin to understand that Ultimate frisbee has nothing to hold the game together except for the players themselves. Spirit of the game encourages safe, enjoyable and orderly play.

Merivale high school was where I was formally introduced to the sport and is what got me hooked to the sport I spend all my free time playing.

I look up to Josh because of his ability to lock up any handler on defence and I look up to Caleb because of his consistency and decision making.

But, it also means not allowing the score to dictate the kind of attitude that you play with or the respect you show to other players.

Ultimate players you look up to and why? / Joueur(euse) d’ultimate que tu considères ton modèle et pourquoi?: Aiden Wiebe and Kullin Merilees. When i first started playing ultimate Aiden was one of the people who caught my eye right away. Seeing him play, I realized that you can do great things and play your best game while still having so much fun with the team around you. The following year I played on a team with Kullin. I could just tell he had a passion for the game and was willing to put his body on the line and push himself to make the plays he needed to. I have nothing but respect for both these players as they have pushed me to become better as a player and a teammate.
What does Spirit of the Game means to you? / Qu’est-ce que l’Esprit du jeu veut dire pour toi?: Spirit of the game means showing respect to your opponent and to your teammates. Playing every point your hardest whether your down or up. Not just for yourself but for your brothers beside you. As well as calling fair fouls and talking it out with respect and honesty to your opponent.

To me these guys are really exciting to watch, and I enjoy learing from their gameplay.

I feel like doing these things help keep the game fun, which is really what Spirit of the game is all about.

J’ai découvert l’Ultimate à mon école secondaire et j’ai été choisi cet été pour jouer avec l’équipe compétitive “Origine” à Québec, malgré mes 14 ans. J’ai tellement aimé mon expérience que j’aimerais consacrer la majorité de mon temps à ce sport.

C’est un joueur que j’admire beaucoup, car il ne manque jamais une occasion de lay-out, que ce soit pour faire une défensive ou un attrapé in extremis. Il est très talentueux, mais par-dessus tout, c’est un joueur qui n’a jamais fini de nous étonner.
What does Spirit of the Game means to you? / Qu’est-ce que l’Esprit du jeu veut dire pour toi?: Pour moi, l’esprit du jeu est la bonne entente lorsque deux équipes qui s’affrontent se respectent et jouent de façon amicale. Quand on a l’esprit du jeu, on évite les conflits et la partie est beaucoup plus agréable, qu’on gagne ou qu’on perde.

He got me interested in the sport and has always pushed me to be better. I also look up to Jon Grimwood because he is a great example of how to play competitively while keeping SOTG a priority.

That fair play is always more important than winning. SOTG is so important because it is what sets Ultimate apart from other sports.

His skill and what he has accomplished with Ultimate is so inspiring to a young player like me. I’ve learned so much in the way of cutting, handling and leadership just from watching him play, but to have the opportunity to play with and against him has definitely helped me improve overall as an Ultimate player.

The focus on spirit of the game creates a positive environment whether in game or in practice. Not only does the fast paced action of the game make Ultimate so much fun, but the sportsmanship from both players and coaches established through SOTG, is why Ultimate is my favorite sport.

In a game that is self refereed the players need to be able to put away their competitiveness and their drive to win in order to make correct calls to uphold the integrity of the game. Sprit of the game makes the game fun for both teams and encourages healthy competition, which makes the game of ultimate more intense and enjoyable.

Ultimate players you look up to and why? / Joueur(euse) d’ultimate que tu considères ton modèle et pourquoi?: I definitely look up to all of my coaches but I specifically look up to Jessica Moser my former High School coach. She was the one that got me into the game and taught me the fundamentals of frisbee. She showed me how to throw a flick, make proper cuts, and be a leader on the field. While I have now experienced coaches with more playing experience, none of them are as fun or have taught me as much as her.
What does Spirit of the Game means to you? / Qu’est-ce que l’Esprit du jeu veut dire pour toi?: Spirit of the game to me means going out onto the field and playing for your team every time. Make their lives easy by giving them easy cutting lanes or easy completions. You can not play ultimate by yourself, so you might as well do everything you can for your team on and off the field.
